Human Ladder

Sorry my skills with technology were not up to par today so no video, I would like you to relfect on our activity and conversation afterword and discuss things that you saw that relate to the key concepts we have learned in Adventure Education; respect, responsibility, communication,empathy, self esteem, trust, collaboration, self efficacy, and group problem solving. Pick one or two concepts that you saw happening and share with us what you saw and the connection it has with the climbing unit that we are in.

  1. I definitely think that during this activity my group worked really well together as a team. We successfully articulated individual ideas as well as improving on the concepts developed by others. Also, I like most people were able to participate in and try out multiple roles. Some people volunteered to go across the ladder, some people were railings, some people held the bats being stepped on, and we continuously mixed it up to provide the maximum experience and benefit from the activity. It was also incredibly cool to see the blindfolded people trusting us so much to direct them when and where to go. This activity definitely wouldn't have gone as smoothly had we done it in the beginning of the year before we built trust in eachother.

  2. In the Human Ladder Activity, what I saw were collaboration and group problem solving skills. My group collaborated their ideas, strength, and effort to finish the challenge given upon us. Collaboration is key in climbing because without it there is no team. We have to work together when climbing because climbing is not an individual sport.

    Another concept I saw was group problem solving skills. During the activity, team members were coming up with creative and easier ways to hold the bat. Also, at the start of the activity, we all came together and tried to come up with ideas and solutions to the Human Ladder activity. Group problem solving is another crucial concept in climbing because teams need to solve problems together in order to overcome challenges all the time. The Human Ladder activity was a great team builder that helped us keep in check what a team is.

  3. i think that our group was good at listening to each other. Some of the students that had a different teacher for outdoor adv last semester did the same activity so they knew how to do it.It helped us get started which was a good thing. Then the others in group started to add in more ideas that they had which helped us even more. i think our group had a lot of respect toward each other.
    this activity was pretty challenging especially holding onto the bats for the people to get over. It helped the blinded people to trust everyone in our group more.

  4. My group did a good job incorporating everyones ideas and working out a plan of action before we started. It took a lot of trust for the people who were blindfolded. They had to listen to the rest of the group in order to make it all the way across without seeing anything. This activity required a lot of communication between the blindfolded people and the group, and also between eachother within the group. I felt that this activity was an awesome teambuilder and really forced us to work together as one big teAm.

  5. In my group, we had a great way of coming up with our ideas. Everyone put input into the situation and came up with some great group problem solving. Then also there was a lot of trust between members to pull their weight and be sure to hold on to the bats. Overall, it showed we are getting better at being a class.

  6. In this activity, the big part was responsibility. The idea my group came up with required each one of the group members. So everyone had to move quickly, and it would really mess up the process if one person fail to do his/her job. Two people had to hold a bat long enough so the person could cross. So if one let go of the bat, the perso who was on the bat would have fallen to the ground. My group was able to finish the activity in quicker time because everyone was responsible. As for climbing, the responsibility is a huge part too. Unlike rappelling which you control yourself from falling, climbing is hard to control from falling. People who can catch you are belayer, anchor, backup belayer, and double backup belayer. So responsibilities are required if you don't want the climber to fall.

  7. In this activity my group worked well together. We were able to take ideas from a several different people and put them together to form one. There were a few new class members in my group and I felt that they fit right in. They weren't shy about making suggestion and for the first time we had to get across we used one of their ideas. My group showed that we can all communicate well together. The second idea that was well represented in this activity was trust. The people that went blind folded had to have the most trust because they had to get across by only touching bats. They were able to trust us and after seeing them make it across without a problem I know I can trust that whole group to make sure I wouldn't fall either.

  8. Our group had good comunication, and you could tell this by the way that we were able to agree on how to finish the task. In climbing tou have to know what everyone else is intending, or you might fall; the same went for the activity. Although we might not fall as far, I think that was part of the lesson.

  9. Our group had good communication skills and were able to trust each other. I would say that our group had good communication skills because we weer able to tell the people that were moving along the ladder to move exactly the way they were supposed to without falling. Trust also came into play here. The peope that were moving along the ladder trusted us for them not to fall. They trusted that we would get them to teh other side without falling because they beleive in us.

  10. Our group was really good with trusting each other. Especially when group members were blindfolded, they trusted us to tell them where to put their hands and feet. This relates to climbing, because when climbing we trust the people below us to help. The people below can point out different ways to get up the wall. Also, in both activities there is trust for the people climbing or going over the human ladder not to fall.

  11. I thought the activity was interesting. I never done that before, but my group was able to accomplish it. The conversation afterwards I think revealed that there are not any outsiders. I am new to this class and I felt perfectly fine participating in this activity. I am not scared to speak my mind and I thought a lot of people also were comfortable with sharing ideas.

    There was a lot of communication. Without it my group would not have been able to finish the activity. It would have been impossible. Communication also links to self-esteem becasue people had to come forward in front of a group of people and share their idea that may or may not work. You have to feel comfortable with yourself in oder to feel comfortable with a group and trust them.

  12. Trust and communication always seem to come up in any activity that we do in class. I also think that responsbility was a big part in this activity since everyone had to do their own task, and if even one person was slacking off the entire group wouldn't have been able to accomplish anything. My group also communicated well when discussing how to do the activity and made sure that everyone in our group knew what we were going to do before we began. This connects to our climbing since everyone has to play a role when climbing and there is a chance for failure if someone is slacking off. We also need to make sure that everyone knows what their role is and how to do their role while climbing.

  13. Communication was the biggest part of our ladder activity. Not only was it essential while we were moving people who do not have the ability to see, but the planning part that happens beforehand. I dont know if it is just that our group was well prepared or what, but there is definite improvement in our communication and LISTENING skills since the time we did these types of activities before. Our skills of communication aided us in this activity because our two "climbers" could not see, which carries over to when someone is climbing and they cannot see and we must act for them and direct their hands or feet somewhere. The talking I feel also helps us all become more comfortable with eachother and feel more accepted because we are also listening, and that includes both the ladder and the climbing.

  14. We definitely worked really well together. Everybody was able to try out different roles and positions in the group, so that nobody was doing the same thing for too long. We communicated really well, especially for the second round where we had to help the climbers get across without being able to see. It was interesting, after the first trial, to try and think of another new way to do things.

  15. I think communication definitely played a key role in this activity; however, responsibility is also an important part that contributed to the success of this activity. Because every one of us was taking our own responsibility, we were able to complete it. All the group members did their own work, they talked, they moved around to make the “ladder” and they tried to figure out a better way of doing the activity. If one of us was not doing works, then probably we wouldn’t finish so quickly. Thus responsibility is a key part to this activity and it is also important to everything we will done later in class, and in our lives.

  16. I thought that the people in my group communicated very well with one another. This was an important because we all needed to communicate in order to be on the same page. Moreover, the activity required a high level of trust and excellent communication. My group possessed both of those skills, therefore we successfully completed the activity.

  17. In the human ladder, we had a lot of communication and this was key to succeed in this activity. We had to talk to each other and make sure we knew what we were doing and that we were cooperating. Communication is needed while we climb because we need to make sure our belayers are ready to belay, the anchor is ready to hold the belayer down in case of an emergency, and to talk to the climber if the climber is having trouble getting over an obstacle.

  18. During the human ladder activity, our group had a lot of trust in each other. When two people were blindfolded they trusted us to tell them where to put their hands and feet. In climbing you can't always see where good places are to put your feet which is how it relates to the ladder activity. Our team also had good communication because we told the people where to go to put the least amount of pressure on the people who were holding the bats. This relates to climbing because you have to be able to tell the climber where the best positions are to put their hands and feet.

  19. during this activity, our group got done in a bout three minutes and it was because we had everyone work as a team and pitch in ideas. we were all talking to one another and we worked well like a system, and not as individuals. this activity probably was made for us to be talking to eachtoher. becasue when were climbing the wall we cant see where we need to go sometimes so the spotter needs to direct the climber just like the blindfolded person walking across the human ladder

  21. I saw our group doing a lot of commucation going on and everyone was working together and helping out. After the talk i understood that what we had to do and felt with the group and where i fit in.

    I believe the main ones that really go along with the activity is communication and trust.

    With communication, when you are either on the wall or on the beam, or even the human ladder communication is key so you are able to get up or across there safely and properly. It's also good for support so you don't get scared and miss a step along the way up or across.

    With trust, you have to be able to let the person belaying or holding up the bat rungs for you to trust them and to try and bring you to safety. The belay system and the human ladder system is basically a trust group that will help you in your time of need.

    I would say these are the more important key elements to climbing. :)
