Rappelling

Have you had a chance to rappel down the wall yet? Tell us how rappelling is going? some things to think about, your group, the set up process, technique on rappelling and belaying, your safety, trust issues and anything else that you may have a concern with.

  1. I rappeled down the wall on the first day. I thought it was a fun experience. At first it took us a while to get set up but in the days following we became faster and faster with less mistakes. I really trust my group but it is a little intimidating when you first go down. The scariest part was letting go of the railing but now that I know everything will work fine, it should be easier the next time I rappel.

  2. I rappeled the second day. I think everything went well. I don't think there were any problems.

  3. I rappelled the second day! My first experience was horrifying. The worst part was climbing over the rail. I think my group did a real good job securing me and making sure everything was ready (rope, stations). Even though I believed in my group, I was scared that I might just fall. Rapelling looks easy, but when you actually rapel it is a whole different story.

  4. I rappelled on the second day, it was a little intimidating, but at the end I realized it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. I really trust my group to keep me safe. I just hope that my group members think the same of me! The hardest part for me was my grip, and I just need to relax a bit more. I felt safe though, because we had checked and double-checked everything, and my group members are responsible. It's going good!

  5. I rappelled on the first day and wasn't too scared. The first time you sit back and release the rope was a little freaky, but I got over it. For me it wasn't a big deal because I understood the system well and trusted that my both the system and my classmates would keep me safe. The technique of belaying and rappelling was pretty straight forward, but the set up is more complicated. After a few more times of setting everything up, I'm sure it'll be more easily recalled.

  6. I haven't gotten the chance to rappelled yet. I was the belayer and I felt confident doing that part. Setting up is getting easier the more we do it. When I get to go on Tuesday, I know I will be safe because I trust my group and saw that those who already went didnt have any issues.

  7. I rappelled and I thought it was both fun and horrifying. The hardest part was the beginning when you had to climb over the railing, sit back, and let go of the pole. My group was really supportive and reassured me the whole way through. There were some mishaps along the way like when my foot slid off of the wall or when I couldn't sit back because my hand kept on slipping off of the railing or when my velcro started coming undone as I sat back. But the whole way through, my group knew exactly what they were doing and I felt very secure. The one thing that I want to pay more attention to next time is the set-up-- for example, the length of the webbing. I think it will make the next trip down more comfortable and fun.

  8. i havent rappelled yet, but im very scared too. My group was very good at communicating with each other. When we didnt have Mr. H to help us out, The person going down (Grace) was communicating with us the whole time which helped her a lot. Im very nervous to go down but hopefully i will be okay

  9. I rappelled on the second day, and it was terrifying. I trust my group completely, but taking my hands off the railing and on the rope was difficult for me. Now I know the set up is secure. Next time should be much easier. Also, when we were put into our groups, I never doubted trusting anyone in my group. We were supportive of each other through the possible scariness of the situation.

  10. I rappelled the second day and it was quite an experience. At first I thought it was going to be easy and fun. Then once I was on the outside of the railing I started freaking out about letting go since I had no idea how effective the friction things were. So falling back into my grip was very scary. I thought I was somehow not going to be able to keep my hand on the rope, but in the end everything went nicely. I loved rappelling and can't wait to get more familiar with it for it trip.

  11. i have not rappelled yet, but on the first day i was the belayer and that was still a little scary because i didnt want to drop anyone(even though i knew that wouldnt happen). when i do rappell i will probably be scared to let go of the railing the first time, but it will only get easier after that because i trust my group.

  12. I have rappelled and I thought it was fun. I was nervous at first but my group cheered me on so I went. I think the whole setup is a little difficult, because no one wants to mess it up. I think it will get easier with more practice. I really like my group. They all know what they are doing and I trust them all when I am rappelling.

  13. I have not had a chance to rappel yet, and although it looks quite fun, I am very nervous for it. I do not have a fear of heights or a lack of trust in my rappelling group, but I am, simply put, always a worry-er (what could or might go wrong). I think I am fortunate to have such a good group and it seems we work well together. We've been pretty good at the set up process and have gotten everything done in a shorter amount of time each day we've rappelled. Along with what Joyce said we've noticed that the smaller the top of the knot in the knot the less distance the rappeller has to fall til he/she is taunt on the top bar. I believe that we should work harder as we go on to be safety conscience just so that we do not get a false sense of security and let something stupid happen. It makes me feel better when Mr. H checks up on us before we begin to let someone rappel just so there is a more experienced eye who might catch something that slipped ours. Tomorrow is my day to rappel and I am both excited and pretty petrified..

  14. I rappelled the second day and it was fun. I was scared but less than halfway down, I was confident and trust my group very much. Setting up took some time to get used to but it got faster. It was a blast!

  15. I rappelled on Thursday. I felt pretty safe and trusted that my group knew what they were doing. My main concern is the setup process because I'm not very good with making the knots and I usually rely on my group to do most of the work. I'll try to do more work during the setup process and hopefully get some help from my group if I get confused.

  16. I rappelled on Thursday. I trusted my group and felt pretty securered by them but I'm just scared of heights so I have difficulties going down at first. The scariest part was letting go off the railing,I couldn't realse my hands from the railing for a long time. Mr.H and my group members cheered me a lot and I finally rappelled down successfully. I really appreciate Mr.H and my group's help, they supported me a lot. Jennifer Meng

  17. I've gone rappeling twice and it has been a lot of fun! I think the hardest part is trusting yourself that you can get over the bar and then starting down the wall.

  18. I rappelled on Thursday, and today(Tuesday). We had some problems setting it up on last Monday, but we understood everything on the next day. It was fun because I followed the rules and trust my team.

  19. I rappelled on the second day. It was really terrifying at first, when I was holding onto the rail and had to lean back for the first time. After you get over that, it was actually kind of fun. I'm excited to go again because I feel like I'm going to be less nervous and I'll be able to enjoy it more. My group is really great about making everyone feel comfortable, so that's definitely a plus.

  20. I rappelled 3 times so far. The first time I was really nervous I didn't want to let go of the rail. and I actually fell a little halfway down, so my second time I refused to go but I was forced to go!(: I'm really glad I did go though because I lost the fear of falling again and felt more in control (I later found out I was supposed to hold onto the orange rope behind my back so I don't fall...which I didn't do the first time!) I'm really enjoying repelling because it's a lot of fun, even when things go wrong our group always finds a way to get through it. For example I got stuck halfway through repelling, and it was because I wasn't hooked up right, but I got pulled up, got it fixed, and went right back down.

  21. I have been loving repelling. The first time I did it it was a little shaky and leaning off the wall was tough. It kind of reminded me of trust falls because you were relying on others to catch you but you still have to control yourself. The second time went by really easily. The third was the most fun because I went upside down. It was really cool and I felt so safe after watching H just dive off the wall that i really felt like I could do anything. and be fine.

  22. Its funny I was watching this show called "I shouldn't be alive" and it was this guy who fell down a huge crevace in the alps and all the stuff he was using was the stuff we use in class, and it saved the guy. well obviously there were other things that we don't have, but seeing all the ropes, harnasses, carbeners, and such. well it me really pump and i have been loving being a little dare devil while rappeling. It has been a really good time, and im ready for devils lake...... naw...

  23. i think that rapelling is very fun. it was scary at first when you havce to let go of the railing but the more times u do it, the easier it gets. i think my group is very good and it makes it easier to rapell. i think the backup system and original syatem work very well and thers no chance of anyone getting hurt if everyone is doing their job right.

  24. I love repelling. I think it my favorite part of gym class this year. Everything we've learned about trust, communication, and cooperation, is all coming into play. I repelled on the second day and surprisingly I wasn't as afraid as I thought I would be. The change from letting go of the wall and grabbing the rope made my heart drop a little, but overall I love it and I can't wait to keep going at it. I trust everyone in my group and I know that I can count on them to keep me safe. I think we all work really well together and our system that we have works really well.

  25. At first I did not enjoy rappelling because I was scared to let go. Mr. H told me to let go of the railing like twenty times, and when I did, the system worked and I didn't fall. Now that I have confidence in the security system, I'm able to enjoy rappelling.
